How Generative AI will change the gaming industry?
The following is a Twitter thread I posted about 6 months ago in Los Altos. Most of the views are still the same, but you can read the latest updates in the article at the end of this one.
1) What Shifts Happen?
Changes in devices and productivity tools always lead to three shifts in the content and entertainment industry:
a. The influx of new creators
b. The evolution of the form of content expression
c. And the alteration in how people interact with content.
A century ago, movies brought novels to the visual realm, 40 years ago, computer games made storytelling imaginations intractable, 20 years ago, the emergence of DV, the internet, and PCs led to the birth of YouTube.
2) To B or To C?
It's apparent that new technologies present major opportunities to reduce costs for existing organizations which are often not the early adopters. Despite the excellence of the iPhone's camera, convincing professionals accustomed to using DVs and Canons for photography and videography to switch is challenging. The primary adopters of the iPhone for capturing photos and videos are those who have never owned a DV or a Canon.
3) AI-Powered Roblox or a New Frontier?
On the consumer front, with platforms like Roblox, it seems straightforward to apply generative AI to develop a similar platform, we tried this when we started @OriginX_AI.
Yet, we encountered a lot of challenges in trying to replicate the game creation process of Roblox. We realized that generative AI may not be suitable for creating traditional games. Much like Twitter is not designed for bloggers and TikTok isn't aimed at YouTubers, they all forge a new category of content platforms.
Last year, after launching a POC of an AI-powered Roblox, I presented it to some friends. One of them, the founder of http://Musical.ly, shared that 10 years ago, they spent 3 years working on the idea of YouTube for mobile phones, which turned out to be a failure.
Then they pivoted to http://Musical.ly because they realized that creators and the user scenarios on mobile were completely different from YouTube. They abandoned the idea of allowing users to upload any original short videos and instead focused on the use case of lip-syncing of trending music. They didn't allow creators to upload original videos until they achieved 1 million DAU. This was an excellent zero-to-one strategy.
4) Alive AI
That's why we pivoted to @beALIVE_AI. a brand-new interactive entertainment platform for THE REST OF US.
We realized that the essence of games is interactive storytelling content. Our humans already created a vast universe of storytelling fantasies, as far as the Iliad, Homer's Epics, as near as Harry Potter, The Tree Body Problem.
We have to rely on Hollywood and game studios to make these storytelling fantasies visible and interactive, and it's never possible to establish personalized connections which is especially important for those who have gained significant enlightenment from such storytelling.
As a group of storytelling believers and beneficiaries, we started with bringing all your beloved storytelling characters and fantasies ALIVE, INTERACTIVE, INTO YOUR LIFE.
It's still a very early version. We have primarily developed a foundational multimodal generative model, the Origin Gene Model, so now you can have much more immersive interactions with your favorite fictional characters.
Next step, we will add more characters that are widely beloved, enhancing the model's capabilities, such as asking Naruto to compose a piece of music tailored to your current mood, sharing what you love, performing what you need, generating infinite and diverse open worlds.
We will launch a Creator Hub when we achieve millions of DAUs, which will fundamentally change how fantastical imaginations are transformed into interactive entertainment and open worlds.
It's a new SOCIAL NETWORK. We have all been enlightened by great storytelling, especially those who do not particularly enjoy interacting with flesh and blood humans. By bringing all the storytelling characters and fantasies ALIVE, we are creating a new kind of social network.
It's a new way to CREATE and INTERACT with entertainment. We aim to create an interactive multimodal generative model for the rest of us based on the foundation and open-source models and long-term memories, transforming every imagination into interactive content instantly.
It's a new way to RECOMMEND content and GET THINGS DONE. Your AI friends will learn much faster than those algorithms. So they will reach out to you actively like close friends, share movies you may love, food you might enjoy, perform tasks for you like thoughtful assistants.
